DESIGN NOTES: Materiality And Place - A Conversation with Charlie Ray & The Green Room Landscape Architecture
Materials Pop-Up By Eco Outdoor
Join us for a conversation with Charlie Ray of The Green Room Landscape Architecture on materiality and the art of designing with place. Known for landscapes that feel both modern and attuned to the desert, The Green Room begins each project by asking how materials such as stone, soil, plants, and form can express the character of a site.
This event explores the philosophy behind their work: a sensitivity to ecology, a reverence for natural textures, and a belief that every landscape should feel specific to its place. From hardscape selections to desert-adapted plantings, the discussion will highlight how thoughtful material choices shape environments that are both functional and resonant with their surroundings.
Discover new materials at the pop-up by Eco Outdoor, a company known for crafting and curating natural surfaces that celebrate texture, character, and the beauty of imperfection found in nature. From stone and handcrafted brick to wood and tile, their range of materials are perfect for creating meaningful and lasting spaces.
Attendees will also get to experience The Green Room Landscape Architecture’s studio, housed in a low-slung modern building, originally designed by Alfred Newman Beadle, which once served as Beadle’s own architectural studio. With crisp white interiors, a steel structure, and clerestory windows, the space reflects both Beadle’s architectural legacy and The Green Room’s ethos of materiality and design informed by site and setting.
This event is open to all: architects, designers, contractors and the design-minded community.

CHARLIE RAY
Founder, Principal, and Director of Design
Respected as the studio’s design lead and one of the industry’s most imaginative designers of landscape, Charlie connects “big nature” with architecture to create immersive experiences that foster a deeper engagement with nature. He brings together clients, collaborators, and teammates to expand the range of artistic perspectives. His landscape designs are timeless, ephemeral, ecological – and ever-evolving. Drawing inspiration from nature and natural forms – and his multidisciplinary education in architecture, fine arts, and the neuroscience of design – Charlie crafts elevated and harmonious atmospheres for clients and the people who experience outdoor spaces. As he imagines the studio’s future, he continually considers innovative ways of thinking and approaches to producing exceptional work.
