KINDRED BY RED MODERN

A celebration of the hand-made, iconic design, and community

Join us as we celebrate a new chapter in Red Modern’s evolution — a preview of Red Modern founder Jonathan Wayne’s new bespoke furniture line, Kindred. Each piece is handbuilt as a one-of-a-kind collectible, with vintage glass inlaid into each design. Both art and function, Kindred embodies the beauty of the handmade, the unique, and the enduring, the kind of pieces that are meant to last a lifetime.

The showroom will be transformed into an atmosphere of celebration with community, music, bites, and refreshments. It will be an evening of discovery, connection, and the spirit of gathering in one of Phoenix’s most iconic spaces.

Red Modern grew out of a family legacy of collecting and living with art. Inspired by Wayne’s grandparents’ passion for surrounding themselves with objects rich in history and connection, he continues that tradition by curating works that carry the vision and soul of their creators. From Arizona-made furniture by Allen Ditson and Lee Porzio to international sculptures and fine art, Red Modern restores and presents pieces that turn ordinary spaces into something extraordinary, where craftsmanship, story, and design come together.

Red Modern is housed in a restored 1954 Ralph Haver building, one of Phoenix’s architectural gems. Once hidden beneath fluorescent lights, cubicles, and layers of paint, the space was carefully peeled back to reveal its original character. Exposed block, ceiling beams, and restored details now frame a gallery that continues to honor history, design, and craft.

KINDRED

By Jonathan Wayne…. The material and the story create the process. In this case the story began with Edward Wormley. In 1960, Wormley’s Janus line was launched. Wormley collected Tiffany tiles and ceramic tiles made by Otto and Gertrude Natzler and inlaid them into tables, credenzas and dressers. There was a finality to this line as there were only a limited number of tiles. Once those were gone the Janus tables and chests were no longer made.

Some 15 years ago Red Modern owner Jonathan Wayne purchased a few cases of 1960’s Swedish glass by Erik Hoglund. The red and orange and green and blue circular glass pieces had been sitting in the Red Modern warehouse awaiting their story. Now they are the material that will harken back to Wormley’s Janus line and perhaps help to narrate a new path - Kindred.

Kindred is my first attempt at making furniture. The new line features credenzas, side tables, coffee tables and dining tables in walnut and oak, inlaid with vintage glass designed by Erik Hoglund. When I design or redesign or restore a piece of furniture it is always a conversation with the object. I can start with an idea or vision but invariably the piece tells me what it needs- what color, what finish, what nuance. The curve of the 1960’s glass created the curves of the sides of our credenzas and tables. The forms of the furniture were shaped by the organic forms and colors of the glass. Edward Wormley began this story with Janus.

I am hopeful that I can continue the story and the journey with Kindred.
