Warm Modernism, Desert Edition

Entering the gates of the exclusive Glenn Moor at Troon Village in North Scottsdale, the first thing you notice is the stillness. As any desert dweller knows, there’s something about the open vistas, saguaro cacti, and dramatic boulder outcroppings that invites you to drop your shoulders and breathe just a little bit deeper.
It’s easy to see why luxury home builder Vicente Terán chose this peaceful desert setting for his second spec home project. The question is, why was there even a lot still available in this 30-year-old luxury custom home community? For Vicente and Terán Developments architect José Terán, the sloped lot, a feature that drew them in, may have been what kept other developers away. The father and son duo knew they could work with the terrain, designing a home that opened to an infinity pool on the hillside’s edge, returning water to its natural reservoir.
“The challenges that drove people away for 30 years led to strength in our design,” explains Vicente. “The sloped, one-acre hillside lot influenced the home’s orientation, elevation and indoor-outdoor relationship. We positioned the residence to frame the mountain and desert views while creating privacy from neighboring homes. Expansive glass, large sliding doors, and the infinity-edge pool allow the architecture to open naturally into the landscape.”
Drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright, Vicente says a hallmark of his projects is embracing nature, allowing the Sonoran Desert to help shape homes that feel sophisticated and contemporary while remaining inviting and connected to their surroundings.
“We describe the Glenn Moor residence as warm desert modern,” he says. “Clean architectural lines and expansive glass are balanced with natural stone, warm wood tones and layered textures.”
While showing off the project, Vicente, a former college baseball player, is quick to mention that when he kicked off Teran Developments in January 2025 he knew he wanted the right people on his team.
“I was a pitcher,” he shares. “One of nine guys on a field. I learned about what team sport really looks like. I have the most fun when I’m working with high-quality people and trade partners. I know there will be challenges, but with the right people, you trust the process, then enjoy the reward of getting to sit back and see what we created together.”
It began with an easy pick – Vicente’s father José, an accomplished architect from Sonora, Mexico, specializing in designing complex observatory projects around the world. José also designed and built the Terán family home in Oro Valley, Arizona, an experience that clearly made a lasting impression on then-13-year-old Vicente. The next addition was interior designer Joel Contreras, recommended by a friend, who had recently worked with Contreras on the renovation of a luxury residence on the slope of Camelback Mountain.
With the key players in place, Vicente took on his first spec home build, which he completed in just six-and-a-half months, selling the home before it was ever listed. He credits his ability to oversee the smooth flow of a project to his 10 years in project management at CHASSE Building Team. There, he was responsible for the K-12 education division until January 2026 when he took the plunge and went all in on Terán Developments.
“I know how to schedule, how to plan for constraints. There is no leeway when you need to open a school, and real consequences when you don’t finish on time. I love the challenge of figuring out how to take my experience from a high-level commercial company and bring those practices into the residential space to enhance our schedule and budget.”
After working with Vicente on two completed Scottsdale luxury spec homes, Contreras says he appreciates the developer’s up-front planning. “He establishes a realistic budget, understands what he’s trying to accomplish, and takes a lot of the guesswork out of the development process. He’s also just really good with people, which is an underrated skill in this business.”
The designer says Vicente has the rare combination of having really good taste while also knowing when to trust the people he hires. “On the design side, he gives us room to do what we do best, and he’s consistently honored the design vision all the way through construction.”
Walking through the entry courtyard, outdoor entertainment spaces, and interior, it’s clear that trust paid off, resulting in a home that achieves the vision. Native desert cactus and boulder views create the backdrop, with interiors to match.
“Natural materials are a big deal for us,” says Vicente. “Warm wood cabinetry and ceilings, raw exposed aggregate block and concrete hardscape, and desert-toned surfaces soften the home’s contemporary architecture. Repeating this restrained material palette throughout the residence creates warmth, consistency, and connection.”
A third Terán Developments project is underway just up the road from Glenn Moor. And while Vicente says he never intends to grow too big, he always has his eye out for the right property. Striking desert vistas with room for an expansive single level home and spacious casita are among the boxes that must be ticked.
“It’s an honor to create beautiful homes,” he says, “designed and built to stand the test of time.”
