Tour two Arizona homes designed nearly a century apart, each offering a distinct perspective on desert living. From the historic Rancho Arroyo in Phoenix to the newly built Avenida in Paradise Valley, the tour explores the relationship between place, architecture, and honoring the desert landscape.
Meet the principals behind the interior and landscape design, and hear the history of a storied adobe home that Phoenix grew up around. Explore how each home responds to the Sonoran Desert through materials, orientation, shade, courtyards, indoor-outdoor living, and landscapes that feel integral to both the architecture and the climate.

RANCHO ARROYO
Rancho Arroyo is a 1926 Pueblo Revival home in central Phoenix and the personal residence of Scott Burdick, managing principal of Wiseman & Gale. The house reflects the same approach that carries through the firm’s work: layered with history, travel, craftsmanship, and a deep respect for place. Scott describes it as his version of Arizona style: not a literal interpretation of the Southwest, but an eclectic mix of European antiques, contemporary art, Southwest textiles, handcrafted details, and pieces gathered over years of traveling and collecting, all set within the architecture of the original adobe home. Rather than reinventing Rancho Arroyo, he has adapted to it, letting the house, its history, and landscape to lead. It’s a home that’s both personal and distinctly Arizona.

THE AVENIDA
Avenida del Sol, or "Project Avenida" as it was known throughout the build process, was designed with the intent to honor the awe-inspiring beauty of life in the desert southwest. This specific team was assembled by the developer for their individual talents in architecture, landscape design and construction. It was paramount to the designer to create a property that evokes a sense of history and soul, even though it is new construction. It's hard to believe this was a blank canvas of dirt just a few years ago. Secondly, it was mandatory to make every corner of the property beautiful. As the designer said: We have a full acre, let's use it all. Every inch got adequate attention and feels uniquely curated.
It was also important to craft places both indoors and out, that invite you to take a breath and relax. Using organic textures, reclaimed and salvaged materials as well as tones that exist in harmony with the environment, the team worked to infuse endearing vignettes and character into the home and the land. With so much of life happening on a screen in front of our faces, Project Avenida quietly nudges you to be still, to look up and savor the scenery. In return, it offers a sense of renewal and a deep appreciation for this desert we call "home."

Jennifer Burgess has called Arizona home for nearly 30 years and to this day, the wonder of the desert still captivates her as though it's her first time seeing it. She doesn't think of herself as a designer; it's less about a title and more of an inherent desire to create beauty and delight. Jennifer loves scouring for unique items and materials, and incorporating them into her designs. When she's not working, she'll either be found out near the Phoenix Mountain Preserve hiking with her dog, or watching the sunrise or sunset from her roof.
