ARIZONA MODERNISTS: ALLEN DITSON & LEE PORZIO
An Exhibition By Red Modern Furniture Celebrating The Artists’ Work
The Arizona Modernist “Eames of the Desert” power-couple you’ve probably never heard of: Allen Ditson & Lee Porzio. Presented exhibition style, Red Modern Furniture will seal this prolific mid-century husband and wife duo into your imagination and forever onto your design radar. Allen Ditson was primarily known for his masterful hand-crafted sculptural wood furniture and Lee Porzio was a painter, ceramicist and fiber artist.
Together, this artistic renaissance duo embraced a plethora of materials and projects during the 1950s + 60s in the Valley of the Sun—from pierced metals, molded concrete, cording, tile mosaics or Antiquity style tapestries—to a variety of Valley-wide commissions ranging from airports, banks, public art, churches, and custom home furnishings. Today, much of their public commissions no longer exist. The remaining bespoke artworks, curios and original furniture weren’t mass-produced.
Their incredibly distinct style is now sometimes referred to as “Arizona Modern” by design aficionados. Discover a unique glimpse of the unforgettable work by Ditson & Porzio, with seldom seen pieces from private collectors including objects from the personal home of Red Modern’s Jonathan Wayne.
Red Modern Furniture is a gallery focused on art, furniture and sculpture from the midcentury era along with superbly crafted contemporary works reflecting a modernist echo. Red emphasizes the spirit of craftsmanship, honoring visionary artists who help us elevate our environments and how we relate to them. Red owner Jonathan Wayne believes whether it’s a piece of art, or a well designed chair, each carries stories and history that transform banality into magic, and blank walls into conversations.
