If you ask any second-generation homebuilder when they got involved in the family business, there’s a pretty good chance they’ll say they can’t remember a time they weren’t involved. This is certainly true for Nick McCully, owner of Scottsdale-based McCully Construction.
“When I was a teenager, my first job was working on my father’s job sites,” he shares. “I worked extremely hard, honing my skills as a laborer, learning just about every trade skill involved in building a home.”
And while the passion for homebuilding always ran deep, McCully says he hit pause on his construction career in 2005 to fulfill a desire to work in real estate investment. It certainly wasn’t lack of success that brought him back to the family business, but after generating more than $35 million in annual residential real estate sales, he knew he had achieved what he set out to do, and it was time to get back to building.

“We’ve been organizing focused get-togethers recently that bring together builders, architects, designers, and real estate professionals to have conversations about what’s working, what’s not, and how we can improve. When we started, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But I think everyone who has participated in these gatherings has been pleasantly surprised with the authentic connections we’ve developed and how much we’ve all learned by sharing.”
Renovating homes is challenging work, but it’s the challenge that drives the team. An Arizona native, McCully says some of his favorite projects are the ones that result in transforming homes to embrace and showcase the beautiful Arizona landscape.
